This side dish captures the essence of classic comfort food, combining the velvety richness of mashed potatoes with the tender burst of sweet peas. It’s a dish with deep roots in European culinary traditions, cherished for its universally pleasing taste. Whether you pair it with roasted chicken, grilled fish, pork chops, or vegetarian options like stir-fries, it adds a comforting edge to your meal.
Ingredients:
- 4 large potatoes, peeled and diced
- 1 cup frozen peas
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1/2 teaspoon salt, or to taste
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper, or to taste
- 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
- 1/4 teaspoon onion powder (optional)
- Chopped fresh parsley for garnish (optional)
Instructions:
- Boil the Potatoes: Place the diced potatoes in a large pot of cold, salted water. Bring to a boil over high heat. Reduce the heat to medium and simmer for about 10-12 minutes or until the potatoes are tender when pierced with a fork. Drain them thoroughly.
- Cook the Peas: In a separate pot, cook the frozen peas according to the package instructions. Drain and set them aside.
- Mash the Potatoes: Return the drained potatoes to the pot. Add butter, heavy cream, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder (if using). Mash the potatoes until they are creamy and smooth. You can use a potato masher or a hand mixer for this step.
- Combine Potatoes and Peas: Gently fold in the cooked peas into the creamy mashed potatoes. Be careful not to overmix to keep the peas intact.
- Reheat and Serve: Place the pot back on low heat and gently reheat the potato and pea mixture, stirring occasionally until it’s heated through.
- Garnish and Serve: Once heated, transfer the Creamed Potatoes and Peas to a serving dish. If desired, garnish with chopped fresh parsley for a pop of color and flavor.
Notes:
- You can adjust the seasoning to your taste. Some people prefer more or less salt and pepper.
- Feel free to customize this dish by adding grated cheese for extra creaminess or crispy bacon bits for a savory twist.
- Leftovers can be refrigerated and reheated, but they may lose some of their creaminess, so it’s best enjoyed fresh.
Enjoy the comforting flavors of Creamed Potatoes and Peas as a side dish to your favorite meals!
